a tempo-30-zone in Hamburg

Eine typische Tempo-30-Zone in Berlin: Man biegt von einer Vorfahrtsstraße in die Langsamzone ab, fährt rund 600 Meter durch ein Wohngebiet und verlässt die 30er-Zone schon wieder auf die nächste Vorfahrtsstraße… Die Folge: Viele Autofahrer drosseln für die kurzen Strecken ihre Geschwindigkeit kaum…

A typical 30kph (18mph) zone in Berlin: One turns from an arterial street onto a slow zone, drives 600m through a residential area and leaves the 30kph zone again at the next arterial street. The result: Many auto drivers hardly reduce their speeds for these short distances.

The Verkehrsclub and other organizations are now trying to change this. They want to make 30kph “Tempo 30” the norm in urban areas.

Wie würde sich ein flächendeckendes Tempo 30 tatsächlich auswirken? Sicherlich wäre ein Pilotprojekt in einer deutschen Kommune hilfreich. Die Straßenverkehrsordnung lässt aber solche Testläufe nicht zu.

What would be the impact of a nationwide 30kpm speed limit? Surely a pilot-project in a german community would be helpful. But the traffic code would not allow such a test run.

Das ist wohl die interessanteste Erkenntnis aus den Pilotstädten: Ein niedrigeres Tempolimit macht Radfahren und zu Fuß Gehen attraktiver. In Bristols Tempo-20-Bezirken wurden 20 Prozent mehr Strecken mit dem Fahrrad zurückgelegt und 23 Prozent mehr zu Fuß.

The most interesting result from the pilot cities: A lower speed limit makes cycling and walking more attractive. In Bristol’s Tempo-20 districts routes were traveled 20% more by bike and 23% more by foot.
