..takes advantage of an advanced polymer which combines high impact resistance, lightweight properties and a gentle flexibility that usually would only be expected on an old Italian steel frame. By using Trivex – an alternative to polycarbonate – the frame also offers outstanding chemical resistance and thermal stability as it is virtually unaffected by most organic and inorganic chemicals and withstands very hot and cold temperatures.

Historical Map: Stuttgart VVS Map, circa 2000
Without a doubt, this has to be one of my favourite transit maps ever. As far as I know, this isometric approach is unique and it is staggeringly effective. Everything is beautifully labelled, and lovely icons highlight important sites like the zoo, museums and sports stadiums. Unfortunately, this stunning map has since been replaced by a far more conventional diagram — a great loss in my opinion…
Our rating: Undeniably brilliant. 5 stars.

The Design Process Behind the New Moscow Metro Map
As you may have heard by now, the Art Lebedev Studio entry will become the new official Moscow Metro map at the end of February. It beat out the other two entries convincingly, garnering 52% of the popular vote.
Of particular interest to me, though, is the design process page for the map on their website: a fascinating look at the hard work and effort that goes into making a world-class transit map. Concepts are tried, refined, discarded and tried again to find the perfect solution. Nothing is taken for granted and everything is evaluated again and again..
The best part of the page? The map halfway down the page where you can scrub through 95 — yes, ninety-five! — different iterations of the map to see how the map evolved over time.
See also this page on Lebedev’s website that details all the features of the final, finished map. Also fascinating!

i will just admire maps, and not make them..

Streetmix is a Code for America project started by Lou Huang, Marcin Wichery and Ezra Spier. It lets you build street cross-sections easily. I love it, and can’t wait to see the opensource community tackle their various to-dos including resizable lanes and different building heights and frontages (i.e. different transects - in fact, I’d love if this was made explicit).
Brian Mount, who made my quick Formr hack a lot prettier and tidier, has already forked the project to add a plan view.
If you have a bit of time, why not dive in and add your line or two of code?

whaaaaat???!
I really like handdrawing streets and cross-sections, but this is kinda cooler.
Zero-Energy Bio Refrigerator Cools Your Food With Future Gel.
Russian designer Yuriy Dmitriev has unveiled a fresh-looking, gel-filled appliance of the future… The fridge does not have a motor or other traditional technology like most refrigerators— the gel does all the work — so, 90% of the appliance is actual usable space.

imageHelp Complete Well-Designed Bike Lanes on Telegraph, 14th St, & Park Blvd.

Your volunteer help is needed with three important outreach campaigns to get bike lanes built on major corridors in Oakland in 2013. Oakland has become one of the most popular cities in America for bicycling and the City needs to keep up with this exploding demand for safer bikeways. You and your friends should not have to fight traffic every time you want to bike for your everyday trips.

On 3 key bike routes, Oakland is considering removing travel lanes to make room for new bike lanes. We want to make sure they design the type of comfortable, attractive bikeway you deserve. The streets are:
