» Will San Diego go big or fall flat with University Avenue bicycle improvements?

San Diegans who like would like their city to be more bike-friendly! Attend the Uptown Regional Bike Corridor Meeting this evening! (I would go if I were still there—but as i’m not, it’s up to you!! :] sry late notice, though)

June 12, 2013. 6 – 8:30 p.m.
Santa Fe Room, Balboa Park Club
2144 Pan American Road West.

University Ave. spans multiple neighborhoods —Mission Hills, Hillcrest, North Park, City Heights—yet has no safe cycle infrastructure to connect them. There is no parallel west-east residential street that would work as a “bicycle boulevard” because they get cut off by canyons and freeways, plus all the destinations are on University. Root for cycle tracks on University Ave!

A horrible, dangerous intersection on University Ave. at Sixth Ave in Hillcrest. I used to live two blocks away. The pavement is bumpy here, and if you didn’t already know the layout in this area, you could have accidentally right-turned down into the freeway. NOT KIDDING.

cycle tracks in Rotterdam, NL. (for Dutch standards, Rotterdam is considered a pretty car-centric city, but they still put in cycle tracks so it’s bike-friendly)

but even if you can’t make the meeting this evening, you can still show your support by joining local nonprofit advocacy group BikeSD and/or by sending an email to your councilmember and/or SANDAG.

Uptown regional bike corridor project

Community Advisory Group Meeting #1

Wednesday, December 5, 2012
6:00pm–8:30pm
Santa Fe Room, Balboa Park Club
2144 Pan American Road West, San Diego, 92101

Come out for the first community advisory meeting for the Uptown bike corridor project!

Discuss your vision and goals of bicycling in Uptown, as well as issues and opportunities.

I would definitely go, but I’m not in San Diego, so… any of my followers here in SD, go for me.

This bike corridor is super important because it connects Downtown SD to Uptown (Hillcrest/Mission Hills) through Bankers Hill and Balboa Park. If you bike in any of these areas, or would like to if it was safer and had bike infrastructure, go to this meeting!! (But there will be more in the future, so don’t be too disappointed in yourself if you can’t make it, either)

when people walking on the sidewalk tell people riding bikes on the sidewalk that they should be riding in the street

yeah, i/we know!

was just tryna get sandwiches but which wich was closed, alright??! if they were open, we woulda already gotten off our bikes and be locking them up!

sorry we just happened to ride by same time as you walking out of a bar

and would you have said that to us if we were riding beach cruisers with dogs in basket and looking hella newb..

I think commercial strips should have sidewalks wide enough for pedestrians and cyclists to share. cuz we both wanna go to the shops and restaurants easily, yeah? instead of cycling on the street, then wiggling between parked cars, hopping off bike to carry over the curb, and finally locking up and walking into store.

ah! My commute will be that much better!
That section of First Ave. was so bad I always try to cycle in the middle of the lane (although it’s narrow and I should anyway—sharrows and a sign saying “Bicycles Allowed Full Use of Lane” or “Narrow Lane–Yield to Bicycles” please?) to avoid going over even more cracks and bumps. It’s also the section with more traffic and higher volume of cars. After passing University (southward) there are less cars and I ride home carefree.

done! for the most part!
But I just realized I forgot a star for Scripps Mercy Hospital.
and the street names are on the base map, which I can’t do anything with. I have to make a new layer for street names to overlay them on top of the coloured lines? (GIS newb—tutorial/online course wasn’t super helpful)

We have investigated your request for service and have taken all appropriate and warranted actions to address your concerns - If you would like more details on the results of our investigation please contact Street Division Customer Service at (619) 527-7500.

We appreciate your active interest in your community and we are pleased to have had the opportunity to serve you.

HOLYWTFBBQ, SAN DIEGO! You seriously processed my street service request and got the job done???!! Within a month??!!

I’ll try not to take this as false hope for the future of this city.

Park Blvd. by Meade (University Heights/Hillcrest), g.maps streetview screenshot, before there was even the little stretch of painted bike lane. Before the concrete in the gutter/storm drain area got so crumbingly dangerous it rendered the start of the bike lane useless.

Photos I took with my cell phone today. !

Socal/California/US-style “band-aid” repair.. but oh well! It’s still way safer, right??!

Send a service request to the City of San Diego Street Division if you spot crumbling sidewalk, faded or missing crosswalks, etc. DO IT! Gotta tell the city we need pedestrian and bike infrastructure improved! Not just smooth asphalt for cars.

makin’ my own map!
don’t wanna be in the computer lab all day. even though I’ve opened the blinds.
what to do with overlapping lines??

Vacant office space in Hillcrest to become Walgreens

Originally proposed to be part of a boutique hotel, the vacant building at 301 University Ave. in Hillcrest will become a Walgreens before the end of 2012.

so what, if the boutique hotel thing fell through?
I’m sure there’s some group of creative architects out there that would love to make this place pretty. or upcoming entrepreneurs wanting to set up small shops. (but probably need $$$$)

I should’ve gotten into this stuff earlier and popped in to the Uptown Community meetings.

what I would like: 3-4 story apartment building — ground floor as retail, restaurant/bar, or community space; rooftop garden/park with solar panels.

no one’s got vision here!

Sippin’ on drinks at Urban Mo’s in San Diego’s happenin’ LGBT neighborhood, Hillcrest..  gonna be way more fun staring across at a Walgreens than this!

because we just can’t get enough of big-chain pharmacies!
thanks for accessing the community demands and making the best decisions on our behalf! our urban environment can’t get any uglier!

feelin’ kinda glad I moved out of Hillcrest now..
