Here is the bike 28 year-old Elyse Stern was riding on Friday night when she was hit by Juan Ricardo Hernandez-Campoceco, who was driving drunk.
I would like MPD Sgt. William Palmer to explain to us all how a helmet and lights would have prevented Hernandez-Campoceco from doing this to Stern’s bike with his car, killing her instantly, and continuing on his way without even slowing down.
I would like Palmer to explain to me why, when “one of the key lessons here is prevention,” he immediately mentions a helmet and lights, without saying anything about harsher drunk driving laws. Sure, let’s talk about bike safety, but let’s also talk about how physics, the legal system, and our culture ensures that, no matter who was at fault, motorized transportation will win out in terms of bodily harm, police reports, and a media that still portrays cyclists as outliers and freaks. Explain to me why that is.

“No Criminality Suspected” Stencils Spotlight Lack of Traffic Justice.
Last night, a group of activists traveled to the sites of eight traffic fatalities and stenciled paint memorials for those who lost their lives walking or biking in crashes for which NYPD declared “no criminality suspected” within hours of the crash. This morning, Time’s Up! led a memorial bike ride to the eight crash sites.
In a plea for justice from Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, the stencil memorials ask, ”Why, Ray, Why?”

» Chicago cop charged in hit-and-run that seriously hurt bicyclist

122782:

Bergeson stopped and called 911 from his cell phone without identifying himself as a Chicago police officer and provided the location and condition of the victim, stating “female down, reason unknown, appears to be conscious,’’ according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

CPD makes me sick.

well, at least he got caught. would have been bad/sad if he got away.

hope he gets fired. and if not, that his driver’s license gets revoked. make him a bike cop. see how he feels then.

lol comments:

D Stone: Accident occurs August 3. False police report filed Aug 5 at the station, claiming the cyclist left scene; as did he, apparently, even under his make-believe scenario. SLOW-forward to November 29 and he gets charged? Is our system that slow with non-officers?

Matthew S: Yes, it’s not like television where all investigations are done in an hour

View Minder: What is wrong with the Chicago Police when they can’t successfully hide the crimes of other Chicago cops? This would have never happened in the ‘good old days.’

Juan J: They’re losing their cojones. In the old days, the officer would have hit the guy, too, then back up over both of them to make sure he did the job before he taking them to a funeral home who would have helped him no questions asked. Especially since they would have, no doubt, been gangbangers.

police or driver trolls

This “Lisa” is probably a family member of friend or the guy who hit Scott. First of all, is it illegal to ride a bike at night? Secondly, he was hit at 6AM. in the morning. Thirdly, nowhere in any news articles states he was wearing all black. Fourthly, Scott was going straight on a green, so the driver turning on green is supposed to wait and yield until clear to turn.

read the story and more comments here. there was a memorial ride on friday, 28.09.12.

During July’s Critical Mass in San Diego, a friend of mine, not cycling that night, was walking around the Gaslamp, when excited seeing CM ride through decided to high-five riders and pat them on the back. Unluckily, one of those riders was a police officer who snapped at the friendly pat-on-the-back and immediately threw him down hard on the ground and handcuffed him. Luckily now the charges against him have been dropped. But he posted about it after getting out of the officer’s grip. One of the early comments:

This “Zasueda” is probably a rookie police officer exactly the opposite of what he likes to call himself. My friend did not do anything “milicous and interntional” or the correct spellings. He did not resist the officer at all, was quiet, very dejected-looking, and was only trying to keep his face off the ground so his glasses wouldn’t get messed up.

anyway.. I think I was just going to show examples of trolls on serious stories like these. and the point that they suck and should not be ignored, their IP addresses recored and blocked, etc etc.

London. Right now.

*bass drop*

Fuck the games.

Gross, everyone be safe on your CM rides tonight.

“It would be good to have a live split screen of the opening ceremony and the  protesters being beaten up right now

WTF London

really shouldn’t have taken the bike lanes away and given them to BMW chauffeurs.

all the more reason to go out to CM tonight?

san diegans riding bikes: beware of cops

out to ticket you for riding on the sidewalk. particularly in Hillcrest.

last summer, the city put up mean signs saying “No Bicycle Riding on Sidewalk”, without adding bike lanes on University Ave. or any other effort to make the streets more bike-friendly. This is an especially dangerous area because of the high volumes of car and bus traffic, in addition to a freeway entrance that you don’t want to accidentally ride into (sixth ave).

hillcrest residents would like to ride their bikes, but oh well. also see that bumpy strip in the road? yeeah.. bike-unfriendly city, w’sup!

yesterday, a friend just rolled onto the sidewalk, jumped one leg over bike, and was about to step off the pedal and walk to a cafe, right when a cop spotted him and gave him a warning for “riding on the sidewalk”. *wtfcrazyface* and that’s a warning for not even technically riding his bike. you know, kinda standing on one side of the bike with one foot on one pedal.

anyway, i see people riding on the sidewalk here all the time, because of the dangers i mentioned above. and really, if you warn and ticket people riding on the sidewalk, they’re not likely to want to ride anymore. and the people i see riding on the sidewalk are the less “urban cyclists”, like low-income minorities, and neighborhood gals and guys on beach cruisers riding slow. (vs more experienced, faster, and less fearful riders such as hardcore commuters, fixie hipsters, roadies, etc.)(more likely to be easily discouraged vs “f— you i ride my bike whenever and wherever i want”.)

also, these signs are a big contrast to the ones in Downtown Berkeley, which have friendlier dual/complementing messages: “Walk your bike on the sidewalk. Ride on the street”. Rather than a harsh prohibitive sign. (plus, Berkeley has lots of good cycle infrastructure like Bicycle Boulevards, of which the city is a pioneer, making the streets friendly to ride on.)

my hometown rocks. (photos: my own)

yeah so, if you get caught by a cop for riding on the sidewalk or any other “bad cycling behaviour” in san diego, i would advise truthfully telling the cop your daily experiences cycling and how you feel unsafe on the streets.. until bike lanes, cycle tracks get painted and built.. sidewalks it is. etc. etc.

» more hit-and-runs in san diego

Last Friday night a fellow rider, Andy, was a victim of a hit and run collision. The collision happened on the 3500 block of Nimitz Boulevard at around 11:30 pm, according to NBC San Diego. The 50 year old was pedaling north in the 3500 block of Nimitz Boulevard when he was struck. As of now, Andy appears to be in critical condition and the driver and his passenger who struck Andy still remain at large. The vehicle that struck Andy is a white Hyundai and the suspects are described as having, “short, dark hair and light skin”

If you have any information contact the SDPD.

errehh

another hit and run that occurred earlier this year on March 11.The victim, a student named Sho Funai, was killed by a driver who later turned herself in. Despite pleading guilty to striking Funai and admitting to being under the influence of drugs and alcohol, the THEN 18 YEAR OLD driver may only be charged with probation. In response to the verdict, Funai’s friends appalled at the ruling have started an online petition to demand justice for the death of Funai.

:(

Sho Funai was an excellent student at UCSD, BS and Masters in structural engineering… read more on the petition.

» Sad Truth: We’ll Never Know What Happened to Susanna Schick

It’s been two weeks since the LAPD closed their investigation into the April 6th bicycle crash that left Susanna Schick hospitalized with broken ribs, concussions and other injuries. Schick claims that the driver of a white Lexus ran her down from behind after crossing several lanes into the green bike lane in the late night crash. The LAPD claims she fell off her bicycle. The police basically refused to investigate the crash, despite press reports promising a thorough investigation, and because Schick claims a hit and run, there will likely never be true resolution to the crash.

Streetsblog called out the LAPD several times for their reaction to the crash. For posterities sake, here is the timeline of the Schick crash and investigation, readers can draw their own conclusion as to the thoroughness of the investigation.
